What are Cement Tiles?
Cement Tiles are known by various names such as Encaustic Tile, Encaustic Cement Tile, Hydraulic Tile, Cuban Tile, Moroccan Tile, Spanish Tile, Portuguese Tile, and more. Cement Tiles are a unique and traditional form of tile. We simply refer to them by their most common name: Cement Tile
Unlike ceramic tiles, Cement Tiles do not use clay, nor are they glazed or fired. Instead, they are hydraulically pressed and cured in water. These tiles are composed of three layers made from a mix of cement, sand, marble dust, and natural mineral pigments. They are crafted today in the same way they have been since the 1800s by skilled artisans who pass down their trade through generations. Each tile is made individually with meticulous care and attention to detail.
What sets Cement Tiles apart is their use of inlaid pigment rather than a painted surface, giving them a long-lasting, durable finish. Since their emergence in the mid-nineteenth century, these tiles have been a popular choice for adding pattern and color to various spaces.
Traditionally, Cement Tiles are designed to create an interlocking pattern that comes to life when four tiles are rotated 90 degrees each. This process also reveals a reverse pattern, adding to their allure.
The surface of Cement Tiles is muted, matte, and silky to the touch, with each tile displaying slight variations that enhance its beauty. These variegated colors, combined with a wide array of designs, make Cement Tiles one of the most sought-after options in today’s market.
