Tile trends cycle through shapes and sizes, but one format never leaves the conversation: the 8×8 cement tile. It’s the size most of our patterns are designed for, the size historic floors were built on, and — not coincidentally — the size that makes installation, pattern and budget math easiest. Here’s why the classic square earns its default status, illustrated by our Circulos II Terracotta design.
The Goldilocks argument
Smaller tiles (4×4) mean more grout lines and busier floors; large formats (12×24+) demand dead-flat substrates and lose the handmade rhythm. The 8×8 sits in the middle: big enough for a full pattern motif per tile, small enough to flow around corners, curves and small rooms without awkward cuts.

Circulos II Terracotta: one motif per 8×8 tile, one continuous pattern per floor.
Pattern math made simple
At 8×8 inches, you get 2.25 tiles per square foot — the cleanest multiplication in tile. A 100 sq ft room is 225 tiles plus 10% overage; done. Run your numbers in How Many Tiles Do I Need? and compare cost scenarios with the cost guide.

In lobbies and entries, the 8×8 grid scales from closet to courtyard.

The connected-pattern superpower
Designs like Circulos II are drawn to connect: each tile carries a quarter or half of a larger motif, so four tiles complete a circle and a floor becomes a lattice. This is the design language cement tile was invented for — and it only works when every tile is the same reliable square.

Outdoors, the terracotta palette plus the 8×8 grid equals instant courtyard.
When to break the rule
Hexagons for organic movement, 4×4 for tight mosaics — there are reasons to leave the square. But if you’re choosing your first cement tile floor, the 8×8 is the format with the deepest pattern library, the easiest install and the most forgiving math.
